As a writer, finding the right place to write can make all the difference. Sometimes, the perfect environment can inspire creativity and help us to focus. Here are 5 of the most unique places to write a novel
One place you might not consider is a car mechanic’s waiting room. It’s a place that I’ve actually spent many a day writing my novel over the last couple of years. It might seem like an odd choice (and trust me it wasn’t my first pick), but there are actually several advantages to this space:
It’s a quiet place
It’s a relatively quiet environment where you can sit and focus on your work without many distractions except of course if your name is called to get your car, haha.
It has interesting energy
There’s a sense of anticipation and nervous energy in the air that can be motivating especially when you’re developing characters and trying to explain a particular type of attitude or mood.
There’s a sense of urgency
You’re surrounded by people who are waiting for their cars to be fixed, and there’s a sense of urgency to get things done. This can translate into your own work, helping you to push through and make progress on your novel.
But the car mechanic’s waiting room is just one example. There are plenty of other unique places you can try. Some of my favorite suggestions are:
A cemetery
It might seem macabre, but some people find the quiet, peaceful atmosphere to be inspiring.
A treehouse or a cabin in the woods
Taking a sabbatical to the woods in order to be surrounded by nature can help you tap into your creativity and feel more connected to your characters and settings.
A museum or art gallery
Where you can be inspired by the exhibits and all of the colors around you. Also, some of those artists have the most interesting stories, perfect for character developement!
A busy coffee shop or train station
Any spot that you can people-watch and get a sense of the rhythms of everyday life is going to naturally give your writing a great sense of reality.
Of course, finding the right place to write is a very personal choice. What works for one person might not work for another. Some writers prefer complete silence and solitude, while others thrive in busy environments. The key is to experiment and find what works best for you. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try something new. You might be surprised by what you discover.
